Public mix & mingle with Zone 2 police postponed due to planned protest
Phyllis Sawyer, community affairs coordinator for APD notified those who had signed up to attend the mix & Mingle event Sept. 24 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. that Zone 2 had been “notified that there will be a silent protest at Lenox Mall tomorrow starting at 2 p.m.. This will require Zone 2 officers to monitor and respond to this protest, which could be quite large.” (To read about the planned Buckhead protest, click here.)
Sawyer explained, “That will greatly impact their ability to ‘mix and mingle’ with you in a relaxed atmosphere. Therefore, we have made the tough call to postpone this event until a day when they can truly interact with you and really get to know the citizens they protect.”
She promised to be in touch soon with a new date and time.
The APD Community Partners Group is made up of civilians and Atlanta Police staff who have come together to increase engagement and build trust in the community.
The public had been invited to come out and share a meal with an officer and meet the men and women who patrol their police beat, along with representatives from special units such as APEX (Atlanta Proactive Enforcement and Interdiction), motors, mounted horse patrol, crime analysts, detectives and more working at the precinct.
The event was scheduled around the time of day when day-shift police officers are leaving work for home and night-shift officers are reporting for work to provide the best opportunity to meet the most officers. APD Chief Turner reportedly also plans to attend.
