Sam Massell, Sandra Gordy marry in intimate afternoon ceremony 9/21

Buckhead Coalition President and former Atlanta Mayor Sam Massell, 89, married the former Sandra Gordy, 70, in an intimate Wednesday afternoon ceremony at the Buckhead home they will now share, according to an exclusive story posted by the Atlanta-Journal Constitution’s Buzz column.

The two have been friends and business associates for more than 30 years, according the AJC story. Gordy is president of American-Superior Inc., a wholesale school supplies company headquartered on Marietta Boulevard in Atlanta, according to her Linkedin page.

Massell was widowed last year. Doris Massell, his wife of more than 60 years, had Alzheimer’s disease. Gordy was married once before, years ago, the AJC reported.

Rev. Sam Candler, dean of the Cathedral of St. Philip, and The Temple Senior Rabbi Peter S. Berg, jointly officiated at the double-ring ceremony.

According to the AJC, no one – not Gordy’s sister Ginger Heath, not Massell’s children Melanie Jacobs, Cindy Massell and Steve Massell, not any of their friends or business associates – knew about the ceremony ahead of time.

“I was afraid they’d talk her out of it,” the genial Massell quipped, according to the AJC. .
