Police officer shot during attempted burglary at S. Buckhead apartments
Two men were arrested June 4 after exchanging gunfire with a Zone 2 APD office at the Allure at Brookwood Apartments on Peachtree Valley Road, off Peachtree Road across from the Shepherd Center.
Michael Thomas, who was injured after being shot by the APD officer, is currently in Grady Hospital Detention. Antonio Bell is in the Fulton County jail. Bell was refused bail by a judge on Monday.
Both men face charges of aggravated assault against a police officer, aggravated battery against a police officer, home invasion in the first degree, obstruction, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and criminal damage to property in the first degree.
According to a police report, the APD officer was responding to a call of someone trying to break into an apartment. It was first reported the officer responded to a call of attempted car break-ins.
As the officer approached the apartment Thomas, who was armed with a 9 mm handgun, fired at the officer, striking him in the abdomen area, according to the police report. The officer returned fire as Thomas and Bell ran from the scene and into the parking garage, police said.
After the shootout, the officer discovered he had been hit – but his bulletproof vest saved him from injury. The officer was treated and released from Grady Hospital for bruising on his abdomen.
More officers responded to the scene and witnesses gave them descriptions of the suspects and direction of where they ran, across the train tracks and toward Peachtree Park Drive. APD officers pursued the suspects and arrested them.
A Masterpiece Arms 9mm handgun was found in a nearby Dumpster. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting.
