Former Atlanta COO Peter Aman announces 2017 run for mayor

Buckhead resident Peter Aman, who took a two-year hiatus as partner at Bain & Company to be Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed’s first chief operating officer, has formally entered the 2017 mayoral race, according to a report by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution this week.

Aman officially filed his declaration of intent with the state and city on Tuesday. He said he plans to retire from Bain & Company in June and will spend the bulk of his time on the campaign.

“I believe we can always do more — we can do more in our personal lives and we can do more as a city,” Aman told the AJC when asked why he jumped into the race. “Specifically, Atlanta has an opportunity to redefine what it means to be a vibrant, united and livable city. We can balance the vibrancy of New York with the livability of a medium-sized town,” he added.

Aman is the sixth person to officially declare candidacy to become Atlanta’s 60th mayor. Others with significant political experience are Ceasar Mitchell, president of the Atlanta City Council; State Rep. Margaret Kaiser; and Georgia Equality lobbyist and former Atlanta City Council president Cathy Woolard.

As the city’s chief operating officer, Aman was responsible for managing all city departments and 7,000 employees. He also has served on the boards of the Atlanta Committee for Progress, the Atlanta Police Foundation, the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and The Galloway School.
