Piedmont/Habersham left-turn project to restart with lane closures

With a declaration of “Great News!” the Buckhead Community Improvement District’s Tony Peters Wednesday afternoon announced that construction will restart on the left-turn lane project on Piedmont Road at Habersham roads this Friday with a schedule of work into April.bcidlogo

In an email, Peters said the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) contractor for the project will begin Friday, Feb. 19, with the closure of one lane along Piedmont near Habersham at 9 p.m. that will continue until 5 a.m. Monday, Feb. 22.

Lanes will close on Piedmont Road at Habersham on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to pour concrete for sidewalks beginning Feb. 22 and Feb. 23.

“We are anticipating up to four continuous single lane closures to occur in four consecutive weekends for pipe installation and other construction activities relating to this closure,” Peters wrote.

“Decision on the weekend continuous closure schedule will depend upon the weather, and this is typically not made until Wednesday or Thursday prior to the scheduled weekend activity,” Peters added.

This project has been fraught with delays of many types over the past couple of years.

The project will add a left turn lane on SR 237/Piedmont Road at its intersection with Habersham Road and also includes adding sidewalks and improving drainage. The contractor is Knight and Associates, Inc.

With the combination of the continuous weekend closures and the work planned for Mondays and Tuesdays, no lane closures will occur or be allowed during the daytime on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays until temperatures are acceptable for paving the roadway. Typically, temperatures acceptable for paving begin in mid-March or early April.

The projected completion date for the project is April of this year. GDOT presented the below projected work schedule through April:

• Install pipe
• Install sidewalk and curb
• Install handrails
• Install pipe
• Work on traffic signals
• Install sidewalk and curb
• Mill and pave asphalt
• Stripe road
• Landscape
