Dexter King has bought $1.8 million Peachtree Battle home in Buckhead

Dexter Scott King, the son of Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, is now the owner of a $1.8 million home on Peachtree Battle Avenue in Buckhead, settling into the north Atlanta community where his mother once lived in a high-rise condo owned by Oprah Winfrey at Park Place.

The new home of King, who is also the chairman of the King Center in Atlanta, has four bedrooms and five and a half baths, according to Curbed Atlanta. (Click here for the Curbed article.)

King recently sold his $4.8 million home in Malibu, and was previously splitting his time between Atlanta and California.

It is unclear what drew Dexter King to purchase the estate home on Peachtree Battle Avenue in Buckhead, but he is not the first member of the King family to live in Buckhead and the previous one moved to Buckhead to be in a more crime-free environment than west Atlanta.

In January of 2005, Martin Luther King III announced that his mother had moved from the Vine City home that she and her late husband bought in 1965 after a series of burglaries. Corretta, then 77, moved to a condominium in Buckhead, which was said to be a gift “a very dear friend.”

The Chicago Defender newspaper reported that Mrs. King’s new home was a gift from Oprah Winfrey. And, a warranty deed listed the buyer as Overground Railroad LLC, a company that is owned by Winfrey for real estate transactions, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The family home in southwest Atlanta’s Vine City neighborhood had a couple of minor break-ins during the early 1990s, but the family decided it was time to move its matriarch after a third break-in when the suspect later admitted to killing several women in the area, according to news reports.

Coretta Scott King lived in Oprah’s 4,806-square-foot, 39th-floor penthouse at the upscale 40-story Park Place condominiums, 2660 Peachtree Road N.W., until her death in 2006. Oprah then quietly sold the five bedroom condo in 2008 for a reported $1.8 million, according to news reports and deed records.

Oprah paid $1,515,000 in mid-2003 through her Overground Railroad LLC company for the eight-room unit, according to public records. It’s unclear what Oprah’s use was for the unit during all the years she owned it, except for the time Coretta Scott King lived there.
