Fulton County studies plan to restore reduced library services

Fulton County Commission Chairman John H. Eaves announced Tuesday the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System will unveil a plan to re-allocate existing library resources that could restore cut hours at the Buckhead branch library as early as Aug. 1.

The Buckhead library branch likely would be one affected by the changes.

The Buckhead library branch likely would be one affected by the changes.

As a result of cuts in the county’s 2014 budget in January, hours at county libraries, including the Buckhead branch on Buckhead Avenue, were reduced. If the plan is implemented, 12 library branches could be open Fridays and seven branches could have hours every day of the week.

Under the proposal, county libraries would not add more staff or hours but shift hours of operation at some locations. While decisions are still pending on which branches will be impacted, the goal is to provide library facilities to patrons in all areas of the county.

“We began to take a long look at additional changes to hours after hearing from the general public that they wanted more access,” Eaves said.
